Green TV: This Old House and Living with Ed

We enjoy watching This Old House on PBS (mostly for the building tips and partly for the gardener's accent). The show will be exceptionally interesting this Saturday as they start on the Austin house. This past fall, the show helped some homeowners in Hyde Park renovate their house using green/environmentally-safe practices and products. Since completion, the house has been given a five star rating for green building by the city. This is the first time the show has branched out into all green building practices for a project, and Austin is a perfect fit as our fair city has the oldest green building program in the nation.

livwithed.jpgIf you can't get enough green TV, we recommend checking out HGTV's Living with Ed. The six-part, half-hour series focuses on the Begleys: Ed's environmentally-conscious lifestyle, and how his wife copes with it. In the episode we happened upon Sunday night, Ed and Rachelle get invited to Sundance. Ed decides to drive the distance to Utah in his hybrid (his wife comments that if he could, he would bike the whole way); he buys a Terrapass for Rachelle to make up for the carbon production of her flight there. The episode also features Bill Nye, who recently moved in down the street. We admit to mainly watching the episode for Bill Nye (love that Science Guy), but the relationship between the Begleys drew us in.

If you haven't seen the show yet, HGTV will be showing an episode at 6pm every day next week. We're eager to see what we've missed.

Isn't it just oh so nice that Bill Nye moved into Ed Begley's neighborhood? Did he mention that his fiance found the house, and the second it was secured he ditched her and moved in all by himself? And did we see any evidence of a mate in Bill Nye's life? Does he really look like such a nice guy, or someone who uses lovers and neighbors in a last-ditch effort to get ahead?
