Should Austin Welcome New Wal-Marts? Dionysium to Resolve the Debate

dionysium.jpg

Tomorrow night, the monthly Dionysium meeting willl resolve whether or not Austin should welcome the construction of new Wal-Mart stores. While this seems like a no-brainer to Austin's "Keep Austin Weird" majority, it could be a hot, contentious topic if there are any fervent "Make Austin Normal" believers in the audience.

The evening will also feature a multimedia presentation called "Culture Jamming: Parody, Pranks, and Piracy as Activism" by Afsheen Nomai and a special preview of Graham Reynolds' original live score for Sergei Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin."

Dionysium
Tuesday, February 6th

Many people would go to THIS Wal-Mart on the bus, especially workers, because unlike Wal-Marts on frontage roads, it can be (and is currently) served by a number of good-quality bus routes.

    M1EK,

I disagree with you on many of your points. But let's forget those right now. All I want to know is why you would like less parking?

Most people that go to Wal-Mart don't ride the bus, never will ride the bus, don't want to be in a bus. Solving traffic problems by building less parking is idiotic.

I'm OK with asking Wal-Mart and Lincoln nicely to build something less shitty. I'm definitely OK with making sure they pay for any drastic externalities they generate. I'm even OK with making them build closer to the street / with less parking. But I'm against forcing them to do so - unless Wal-Mart and Lincoln get to vote on what color the people in the surrounding neighborhoods paint _their_ houses and stuff.

Keep Austin Weird By Allowing Wal-Mart

Otherwise there will be more justification for dictating what is permissible to build on your property.
