Music Mondays Presents Air Guitar Nation (Advance Screening!)

Who among us hasn’t stood half-naked in front of a full-length mirror, knees bent, head back, one arm extended toward the heavens, the other windmilling furiously to the stomping rhythm of “Uptown Girl”? Okay, okay—maybe you’d pick something that actually has guitar in it, but that’s your hang up, not ours. Commie.

Anyway, for those of us who dream of rock stardom, but don’t have the time or the inclination to learn an instrument, Alamo Music Mondays presents a special sneak screening of Air Guitar Nation, Alexandra Lipsitz’s much buzzed-about documentary chronicling the birth of the US Air Guitar Championships. The film follows participants in the inaugural US competition as they headbang, fist pump, and knee-slide toward the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu, Finland.

Originally intended as a “reality” series for VH1, Air Guitar Nation eventually morphed into a feature-length film, winning the Audience Award at last year’s SXSW Film Festival and rocking moviegoers and critics at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. Though the film won’t be released theatrically until April, Music Mondays has somehow secured a super-early, super-cheap screening for us lucky Austinites. And there are bound to be some local air guitar celebrities in attendance, so bring your Steve Vai records and a paint marker.

I just recently learnt about the Soundhouse from a VH1 Classic RocDoc. It was a really interesting segment in their "Heavy: the Story of Metal" documentary.

From Wikipedia -- The person most likely to be the originator of the air guitar is Rob Loonhouse who was one of the many visitors of the club The Soundhouse in North West London back in 1975-76.
