We've been all over the city in this column, covering houses from the south side, all the way to the heart of suburbia. In this edition, Austinist returns to our love of life on the cheap. Artists, thrift store hawks and the underemployed by choice - no need to get over a barrel when buying those new digs. This lovable city is still choc-a-block with awesome homes to be had for under 200K, especially if you are willing to check your need for adjectives such as 'HIP' , 'tony' and 'posh' at the door. (And - aren't you MORE hip when you are completely 'unhip'? There is never so much emotion and loathing as when the decidedly hip discuss their distaste for "hipsters". Then again, this columnist sometimes pees a little when she's nervous, so any pretense of social superiority or insightful commentary is rendered invalid.) Alrighty. On to our featured homes, yes?
403 Blackson Ave. - $134,900. 1,028 square feet. Built in the 1960's, with updates in 2005. Miss the sleep-inducing hum of a nearby thoroughfare at night? This 3/1/1 is located a few blocks in from I-35, but far enough in to keep you from staring at the overpass. There are hardwood floors in throughout, and they retained the open, curved storage end-cap from the original construction in the kitchen. Detached garage in back makes a great place to store your spoon collection (or your Spoon collection). Cheap, central, and totally un-hip (which=hip). |
805 Oltorf - $160,000. 1064 square feet. Built in 1952. This 2/1 is located on Oltorf, either near St. Eds or between S. 1st and Lamar, depending on whether it is east or west Oltorf (um, detail hound to listing agent - where's the pride in a job well done?). In either case, you're looking at a decent house that is right in the middle of one of the most desirable zip codes in town. Huzzah! Austinist is wary of a house being this cheap in this area, so we'd kick the tires pretty hard on this one. However, if it all works out, you're stumbling distance from Jovita's or Curra's. Totally central, cheap and hip. Let's settle on cheap+hip, pronounced "chip". This much discussion about it has now rendered it unhip.

94 Anthony - $139,900. 776 square feet. Built in 1922. 2/1/1 located near Metz Park and Fiesta Gardens and just a few blocks from Holly St. Original hardwoods throughout, but we are guessing that weird side annex was an addition not originally included in the floor plans, and may be additional square feet above that which is on record. The tiny dining area off the kitchen has armpit-high wood paneling and black and white checker floors, which makes it the ideal, visually over stimulating backdrop for your remake of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" video or episodes of delusional paranoia. Peter Gabriel = hip. Genesis post-Gabriel = unhip. This house? Totally Peter Gabriel, sans the obsession with stop motion animation.

Probably West Oltorf, as 805 E. Oltorf is an apt. complex.
Not bad if you don't mind backing out onto an arterial on the downhill. (Not that one would even need a car in this area, though...)
