Music Mondays Presents Melody
Tonight, Alamo Music Mondays presents a rare 16mm print of the 1971 British film Melody. Starring Mark Lester, Jack Wild and Tracy Hyde, Melody is the story of two pre-teen children who fall in love and declare their intention to get married – an announcement that is (of course) met with ridicule by overbearing parents and teachers. All we’ve actually seen of this film is the Japanese trailer (that has now been removed from Youtube), but by all accounts it’s a warm, charming tale of misunderstood young love.
So how is this movie of interest to music fans? In a couple of ways: principal actors Lester and Wild had appeared together several years earlier in the Academy Award winning film adaptation of Oliver!, which as we all know is chockfull of music. But more interestingly, Melody’s soundtrack was written in large part by pre-disco Maurice and Barry Gibb – back when the Bee Gees were still writing pop songs like “Tomorrow, Tomorrow” and “Spicks and Specks".
This is quite likely the only opportunity you’ll ever get to see this film; though it was extremely popular in Japan (and may be available on DVD as an import), we’re pretty sure it’s out of print domestically, and VHS copies are not cheap on eBay.
