Tonight and tomorrow evening, the Victory Grill plays host to "She Speaks," a unique performance incorporating elements of jazz, poetry, hip hop, and acoustic music. Presented by local nonprofit arts organization Women & Their Work, the two-night affair will be narrated by E. Christopher “Cocktails” Cornell-- artistic director and founder of artist consortium EPeriod--and promises a "Gen X twist":
She Speaks features Khalilah Ali, Kelly Love Jones, and Renita Walls and forges a new image of women in hip hop. Leaving behind old stereotypes, the performers weave a vibrant, edgy story of contemporary women and the many hats they wear. They’re more than wives, mothers, lovers, providers, and friends; that’s why She Speaks.
Openers include members of Team Neo Soul. Additionally, performers in "She Speaks" will be hosting workshops for local middle and highschool students, examining women in hip hop culture from a new perspective spreading a positive message to urban youth.
