Jeff Tweedy is Trying to Break Austin's Heart

jefftweedy.jpg

Jeff Tweedy is truly a legend in his own time. Occupying the same enviable status as musical luminaries like Thom Yorke and Will Oldham, Tweedy is both prolific and sought after by fans, critics, and fellow musicians alike. It seems the man, with his smoke-addled voice and beat poetry-inspired lyrics, can do no wrong, even as his music has gotten more confounding and restless in recent years.

After founding Uncle Tupelo, the seminal alt-country group, with Jay Farrar, he went on to push the boundaries of his own songwriting, and pop music at large, with his band Wilco. As Wilco has progressed from amped up country to avant-pop rebels, Tweedy has matured exponentially, establishing himself at the vanguard a scene that desperately needs new heroes. Tonight and Wednesday, he'll be performing solo, as he has during recent stretches of Wilco downtime, here in Austin at Hogg Auditorium. Reportedly, there is no set list involved in these performances, so feel free to belt out your fave Tweedy tune, in hopes that the old dog will serenade you. Scott McCaughey (of The Minus 5 and The Young Fresh Fellows) opens.

I find it interesting how I find myself here. I came by way of seeing/hearing Glenn Kotche on the 2006 Drummer's World DVD. I was drawn to his innovation on the drum kit. He mentioned Wilco (of which I was not aware of). Being 56 years old is not really a good excuse for not keeping up with new music. So when I found Sam Jones' film (while surfing on NetFlix) I dipped in and discovered some sweet talent in Jeff Tweedy's music. Thanks.
I have many fond memories of photographing bands for the "Daily Texan" in the late 70's at Hogg and other UT venues.

tongue-in-cheek austinist posts cause people to yell out songs.

likewise, violent video games make teenagers kill each other.

    c'mon, kids. lighten up!

Jeff seemed more than capable of handling himself last night, and his comments & asides are pretty funny to boot. Oh, and jt, the only one who "sucks" around here is a threadcrapping douchebag such as yourself.

There were more than enough morons there last night who were in love with the sound of their own voices. I don't think they needed any encouragement. Jeff Tweedy handled the obnoxiousness better than most.

Ugh...fuck Tweedy. Fuck Wilco. They suck.

Everyone remain deadly quiet...i don't want to spend 15 minutes getting chastised tonight.

C'mon Austinist, don't encourage people to yell requests at the stage! Tweedy's concerts are notorious for being interrupted past the point of annoyance and I'd hate to have to kill the douchebag who won't stop yelling for "California Stars" because Austinist told them to do so.
