Austin's overabundance of cultural stimuli is one of the things that make it such a great city -- heck, Austinist wouldn't be around were it not for the myriad theatre, music, film, and art events happening around us on a nightly basis. It turns out, in fact, that the cultural sector employs roughly 44,000 Austinites and accounts for an astounding $2.2 billion of economic activity per year.
Beyond just improbably large numbers, these figures together mean that it's probably in our best interest to care about what cultural resources we have available to us and, however possible, to ensure their future growth.
This is why the city formed CreateAustin, a cultural planning process that began over two years ago.
Arts and cultural activities certainly unfold on their own through the energy and dreams of creative individuals and organizations. Sometimes these activities are helped by providing spaces, funding, collaborations and other resources. Planning will map out Austin's arts and cultural assets, needs, opportunities, resources, and priorities to help create strategies and action plans for the community to further develop the cultural sector.
Research studies and commissioned reports are nice to gawk at, but they paint only a partial picture of our cultural landscape. To see it in full, CreateAustin needs you, the community at large, to tell them what you believe our city's key arts assets are, and where the funding and growth should be focused over the next five to ten years.
From Thursday through Saturday, various meetings will be held around town. All are open to the public, and no RSVPs are required.
