Volunteering: Help Give Middle Schoolers Skills With Citizen Schools
As you make those New Year's resolutions, you may wonder how to get more involved in the Austin community for 2007. January is National Mentoring Month, and one way to mentor here in Austin is through a volunteer teaching position at Citizen Schools. The Boston-based nonprofit arrived in Austin last year, and helps children in lower-income middle schools to prepare for the rigors of high school and college. They've already won 2006 and 2007 Fast Company "Social Capitalist" awards for their community involvement, and you can help bring this great service to our local students as a Citizen Teacher.
Citizen Schools is recruiting for 12 Citizen Teacher positions for the Spring semester, which begins on February 13th. No prior teaching experience is necessary, just an aptitude for and interest in your chosen subject. The time commitment is 90 minutes per week for an 11-week semester. Volunteers are needed for any of the following areas:
Business, Crafts, Sewing/Knitting, Culinary Arts/Cooking, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages, History, Technology (Animation, Web Design), Journalism, Sports (Yoga or Self Defense), Music, Theatre/Dance, Science & Mechanics, Woodworking (Toys or Furniture), Playground Design, Urban Design, Written Word (Debate, Screenwriting, Poetry Slams)
To volunteer, call Emily Schneider-Krzys at 512-414-3806 or simply send them an email. Past volunteers have included Austin-based playwright Pat Hazell and members of the Yellow Bike Project.
If you don't have time to donate, but do have cash, the Citizen Schools Austin campus also has donation opportunities for science and journalism supplies posted on Donors Choose, a site that allows teachers to request items they need for underfunded classrooms. With community support, this new and innovative program will help nurture and cultivate the talents of Austin's public school students.
