SXSW Rumor Mill: SXSW Hides (160) Band List, But We're Here To Help

sxsw_green_display.jpg

Last week, the Austin Chronicle reported that officials at SXSW are delaying the release of their huge band list. The rationale is that a late release will cut down on the rampant day party scene from last year since party planners won't know who is playing until late in the game. Given the unbridled love we have for day parties, we have our doubts about the effectiveness of these tactics, but that still doesn't get you a band list, does it?

To help ease the sting, we've sifted through MySpace, Done Waiting, the Yahoo! SXSW Group, lots of music blogs, and Pollstar to compile an initial list of acts either confirmed or very likely to attend. We'd like to emphasize that this list is not official, and that bands drop out of SXSW all the time, so don't take this as gospel. That said, there's a good chance you'll see 98% of these bands at SXSW 2007 (list is after the jump):

Zach Gailiafaianiakias? Oh yes, it is on and popping.

Very. But why in the world would you cut down on Day Parties? Greedy Bastards.

user-pic

This blows. And why the hell is Morrissey here AGAIN???

No Riverboat Gamblers? WTF?

user-pic

I also hear the following bands are coming to SXSW.
Little Man Tate, The Cinematics, ¡Forward, Russia!, Jeremy Warmsley, iLOVETRAINS, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats, Battle and Yes Boss.
Thats from talking to bands coming through Boston.

Yay for Ghostland Observatory -- their show at Hogg Auditorium on Jan 19th w/The Black Angels is completely sold out as of yesterday, AND they get to play some spotlight shows at SXSW. And yay for local bands getting to play prestigious gigs in general!

user-pic

I wish I knew why they think the day parties hurt them when their attendance goes up every year. And it can't possibly get much bigger anyway, with every possible space in town booking day shows last year. At least I hope it doesn't get any bigger - my fingers hurt from all that typing.

Day parties are the best part! Why do those people always rain on my parade!?

user-pic

Add Blonde Redhead. The Pitchfork said so!

WTF!?!? no CLAP!CLAP! . if any austin band deserves gettin a shot i think they should.their live shows are so much fun.i know theres still time before we find out who all the bands on the bill will be but i hope they make it.if you havent seen them yet i recommend that you do.youll have a good time.

Does anyone know what the total number of bands was last year? It's over 500, right?

Imagine all the venues in town having something going on each day that week, then assume that at least three bands are on each bill. We can even be conservative and assume there are only twenty venues in town. That would be over 400 bands, and that's not counting parties that might include other acts not on the SXSW list but enjoying the high volume of crowds, and lucky enough to get a show in Austin that week. I'd guess it's fair to say that at the end of the day, the list will be over or around 500 ...

Point being: there's not a whole lot here (local aside) that I'd crap my pants over seeing, but I do eagerly await the next round of reveals.

I assume you're going to hook us up Tom!

There were well over 1,000 bands last year, so this is (at most) a sixth of what will be on offer.

I was just over at the Broken West's page and they are apparently coming too.

http://www.myspace.com/thebrokenwest

jambase shows a moe. show on Friday at the Fox & Hound.

I'm coming over from the UK and the latest from this side of the water to add to the list are The Young Knives and the fantastic Pop Levi.
Can any of you Austinites tell me about a band local to you that i discovered on MySpace, they're called Shapes Have Fangs and i desperately hope to see them while i'm over there, they're bloody great!

user-pic

Protokoll are coming too,
FYI Mark, can't you read The Young Knives are on the list above.

If Austin makes you crazy during sxsw, travel North to Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas for The Valley of the Vapors Independent Music Festival. Same dates as Austin

Bloody Hollies, Trainwreck Riders and Buffalo Killers are coming as well.

I have also heard through the grapevine here in Seattle that Ice Age Cobra is set to attend.

user-pic

How old are you, then? Fourteen?

Just wanted to mention that my band Dujeous (live NYC hip-hop) will be performing at SXSW as well. It'll be our 1st time in Austin, so you know we're hyped. See y'all there...

user-pic

Do you need to register for sxsw or is it possible to buy individual concert tickets only for those shows you are interested in seeing? For those that have attended in the past what do you recommend?

Deadly Syndrome from Los Angeles as well.

Mastadon (with I believe Riverboat Gamblers) will be playing Saturday. agree with the comments about the day parties- i've been to 9 or 10 sxsw's and the day parties are what make sxsw a "must" vs a "maybe". hope the sxsw folks understand how this ecosystem benefits their attendance

Aqualung's myspace page says they'll be there, too.

not offical sxsw stuff, but Bomb the Music Industry, O' Pioneers!!!, Scouts Honor, Jonah Matranga and lots more up on north loop for free shows. not letting some money hungry entity ruin our day shows!

These Arms Are Snakes have just confirmed to play on the 15th.

the golden dogs from Canada on the 14th - who are the new Arcade Fire...
