While we were away for the holidays, Austin's big movie project of 2006 has been making some waves. Dimension Films has unveiled the official website for the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse, and the HD trailer is now available at Yahoo! Movies.
For those who hadn't heard, both directors filmed in and around Austin throughout 2006 on this B-movie double bill. Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" is a zombie flick, while Tarantino's "Death Proof" is a killer car movie a la Christine. Both look as though they've piled on the blood, sleaze, and dirt to essentially create a high-budget version of the lovable exploitation trash that Tarantino screens at his sporadic 'QT Fests' at the Drafthouse. The lowbrow nature of the film didn't prevent it from landing some high profile talent, as Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Josh Brolin, Freddy Rodriguez, Danny Trejo, and Rose McGowan are all in the cast.
Grindhouse opens nationally on April 6. For more Grindhouse footage, check out the sneak preview that aired last fall on Spike TV.

Austinist's Will Mills Gets Dunked For Charity [Video]

Looks awesome! We should all get a portion of the $$$ this flick is going to generate as everyone in Austin subsidized it. Seriously, if Quentin and Robert like Austin so much, it'd be nice to see them reinvesting *their* money into improving the studios around town rather than begging for hand outs from the city and implicitly threatening to shoot elsewhere. With all the $$$ films like this generate why, exactly, do they need our tax/bond dollars?
DEAR EDWARD, I THINK YOU SHOULD GIVE PART OF YOUR PAYCHECK TO AUSTIN. THERE ARE LOTS OF REASONS THAT A PERSON LIKE YOU SHOULD INVEST BACK IN AUSTIN.L FOR INSTANCE, PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO HAVE NOTHING BUT A CARDBOARD BOX NEED YOUR SUPPORT. COATS FOR KIDS CAN ALWAYS USE NEW COATS. THE ELDERLY ALWAYS NEED FANS IN THE SUMMER AND BLANKETS IN THE WINTER.
WHY SHOULD CATS LIKE ROBERT AND QUINTEN GIVE PART OF THEIR PAYCHECK WHEN YOU DONT?
Seems Quentin lends his name to all kinds of movies lately and has nothing really to do with them. Is this one?
No, it's not. Tarantino directed 50% of this 3 hour double feature.
If he's simply producing, they usually say something like "Quentin Tarantino Presents..."
No - this is the real deal. He directed half of it.
Jubby, you raise a good point charities and social support programs and non-profits are much better uses of public dollars than using them to fund a profit making *industry*. I'm all for funding the arts and indy projects, but large studios make big $$$ and I don't see any reason why they need a hand out when as you point out there are plenty of other worthy causes. On the other hand, if the city incentives are used as an investment and the city gets a return of the ticket sales, then that makes sense. Otherwise, feh.
