The Answers, My Friends, Are Blowin' in the Wind

Anyone who's recently purchased a vehicle from Central Austin's Century Motor Car might want to give those folks a call: your personal information is probably strewn along Burnet Road for all to see.
Employees at the car lot were relocating to an adjacent building when they, in their haste, decided to toss their clients' paperwork in the trash without first shredding it. The dumpster used turned out to be busted, and winds scattered the papers into the street.
"It was not intended. This was just a freak accident. If the dumpster hadn't fallen apart, this would never have been an issue," said a rep from Century Motor Cars to KXAN. "It happened, and we reacted the way we should've reacted. That's to get every person out and protect people's rights and if any issues come up, we will protect people's rights."
What's more disturbing is the fact that the Texas Department of Transportation sets forth no stipulations on the containment and destruction of personal information. As KXAN points out, dealers are largely left to their own devices in such matters.
