Natural Home: SoCo Second on Eco-Neighborhood List

The magazine Natural Home has put South Congress second on its list of America's Best Eco-Neighborhoods. The list appears to be arranged alphabetically by city name, so being second doesn't really matter, but at least it's in the top ten.

The area's walkability, integration of residential and commercial space, and access to public transportation helped put it on the list. Great local stores like Farm to Market and Ecowise probably also helped.

SoCo is one of our favorites, largely because of the street front retail space, wide sidewalks, and street parking. "1400 SoCo" (the new mixed-use space being built near Guero's) and the rumored San Jose Hotel condo project are among the most exciting developments happening right now in Austin.

Northloop is the SoCo of the future. But instead of luxury hotels and condos, with a hospital cemetary!

I used to live next door to that cemetary. Lots of great vibes coming out of there. I miss it. I hope someone burns in Hell for making condos on that spot.

SoCo is great, but one huge problem is that the shops run along Congress which is a huge street with lots of traffic and not very pedestrian friendly for the crossing. It would be nice if the city put in more crosswalks with lights for pedestrians.
