Jeff Tweedy is one of the most influential songwriters in America. He has jumped from co-founding Uncle Tupelo with Jay Farrar and helping create the alt.country movement of the 90's to multiple incarnations of Wilco, leaving both some amazing work and a lot of disgruntled collaborators in his wake.
In retrospect, Tweedy's decisions seem more than justified by the merit of the music he produces. Each Wilco project seems to build on the one before it, growing more oblique and experimental and (to some) more interesting as the group progresses. Tweedy and Wilco continue to push genre boundaries as they go, moving from hushed moments to experimental noise to traditional rock stomps over the course of a disc. If some songs can occasionally be grating on first listen, they are certainly the sound of musicians trying for something unique and feeling unconcerned about audience reaction.
In what is becoming an annual tradition, Tweedy has been breaking away from Wilco for an acoustic, setlist-free tour. It is a measure of Tweedy's respect level that tickets for his first show at Hogg Auditorium sold so quickly that a second show has already been added. Tweedy has said that the solo gigs allow him a more diverse song selection and less complication than the bigger full-band outings, so these Austin shows afford one the opportunity to hear favorites, rarities, and new material under development for Wilco's forthcoming 2007 album. If you're curious to see a preview of these shows, his last solo tour was documented on the newly released DVD Sunken Treasure. We've included the DVD's preview after the jump.
Tickets for Jeff Tweedy's second show go onsale today at noon via UTPAC.org. Austinist also has a pair of coveted tickets to the first, nearly sold-out show to give away. To try your luck, fill out the form below.
Congratulations, Lacey!

Jeff Tweedy - Sunken Treasure Preview:

i love jeff, but the degree to which he is a headcase is amazing. Sunken Treasure is a wonderful dvd and a must-have for tweety and wilco fans, but it is hilarious, that after berating an audience for talking - in classic tweedy fashion - he interrupts is set the following night to say how much fun he is having and then goes on for 5 minutes criticizing the talking from fans...from the previous night's show. wow! while i hope there is not a peep from the crowd in january here, if there is, i hope jeff doesn't spend 10 minutes proselytizing
I'd love to win the Tweedy tix w or w/out audience talking
