SXSW 07 Update: Pete Townshend and Iggy & The Stooges Confirm

petekick.jpg

Have you caught up on sleep from last year yet? Because SXSW is only 90 days away. The 2007 edition looks to be as big as ever, as all hotels within three miles of downtown are already sold out.

The rumor mill and early confirmations are now trickling in, with no announcement bigger than that Pete Townshend will both deliver the keynote address and participate in an acoustic showcase with girlfriend Rachel Fuller. SXSW is adamant that no surprise Who gig is forthcoming, and we believe them, but they confirmed that Townshend and Fuller will put on an "Attic Jam," which they've been doing occasionally at clubs during off nights on The Who's current tour. Additional guests will also play the Attic Jam; past guests this fall have included Martha Wainwright, Billy Corgan, Ryan Adams, and Sean Lennon.

Other SXSW speakers include Booker T, Rickie Lee Jones, and rumors also indicate a talk with (indie influence #1) David Byrne. An initial list of performers should be announced in the next couple of weeks, but Billboard has revealed that Iggy and The Stooges will perform a featured showcase. Donewaiting also has a list of most Australia and New Zealand-based acts who will attend, including Architecture In Helsinki, Hoodoo Gurus, Paul Kelly, and Bic Runga.

One final bit of speculation: Scissor Sisters are playing in Dallas and Houston on March 15-16, so we'd be rather surprised if they don't turn up on the March 17th lineup. Who would you like to see at SX07? Let us know in the comments.

I also want to see unsigned incredible local bands. Let's start with local Austin experimental duo, Transmography. They played the best show I saw this year. HANDS DOWN THE MOST INNOVATIVE BAND IN AUSTIN, PROBABLY TX. MAYBE THE USA.

I'd like to see...you know, unsigned incredible bands, preferrably this region. It's a stretch, I know.

He spells his name with an "H." It's Townshend. Totally common mistake.
