Austinist Preview & Giveaway: Bound Stems @ Emo's

Neither hyped enough to be a buzz band, nor obscure enough to make the list of “best bands you’ve never heard of,” Chicago’s Bound Stems have, in any case, quietly become one of the most interesting bands of the past year. Though the band has been recording since 2003, they turned up the volume in November of last year with the EP The Logic of Building the Body Plan. The album, which was greeted with mixed results, succeeded in introducing the group’s intriguing brand of literary math rock to a wider audience. That effort was followed up a mere ten months later by their full-length debut, Appreciation Night. Allegedly complete prior to the release of Body Plan, Appreciation Night nevertheless represents a strong step in the right direction, solidifying Bound Stems’ status as a band to watch.
Tonight at Emo’s, Bound Stems make their return to Austin for the second show here in as many months. With a reputation for compelling live shows to match their work in the studio, and boasting a new-ish addition in singer and mad multi-instrumentalist Janie Porche, the Stems should have no trouble keeping things interesting in the heated intimate environment of the indoor stage. New York City’s Rahim tops the list of openers, which also includes locals The Shells, Quiet Company, and Bello Ragazzo.
