Mike Martinez is a Tree-Hugger
Don't let his burly cue-ball appearance fool you: Mike Martinez is a tree-hugger. That said, even he couldn't get his arms around the 58-inch-diameter oak that would have been cut down and paved over if the City hadn't stepped up to purchase the 5.9 acre lot containing the headwaters of Oak Springs.
The price tag? $1,415,000. Where'd the city get that kind of scratch? Prop 2. Or maybe Prop 3. One of those. Probably. Weren't you paying attention in that last election? What did the developer pay for the property? $287,000 in 2004. Ouch. Nice gain, especially considering that he didn't have to go to the trouble of actually building the Family Dollar store that he was threatening proposing to put there.
