As a follow-up to the $200k special a few weeks ago, this week's column focuses on houses around $700k. Here are this weeks listings:
621 St. George Street, Gonzales, TX - $699,000. 6,000 square feet. Built in 1895. So, this house isn't in "Austin" or "all that close." WHATEV. It is totally awesome. Move to Gonzales, lure small children into one of the two turrets of your Queen Anne Victorian mansion, and bake them into a pie. A savory pie. Pies don't have to be sweet. Best house ever. |
4220 Bee Creek Road, Spicewood, TX - $675,000. 3,656 square feet. Built in 2001. Nothing says "Green Living-Austin Style" like a 3,656 square foot, 3-bedroom house on three acres in Spicewood! Just a short 10 mile drive to shops and restaurants. Plus, there will probably be an awesome 12 lane elevated toll-road that you can speed along in your hybrid RX400 on your way to Whole Foods. |
809 Baylor Street - $675,000. 2,512 square feet. Built in 1920. Wrap-around porch, wood floors, appears to have original window treatments, moldings, etc. [Personal note: we covet this house. We think we would rather live on this block than anywhere else in Austin and we love just about everything about this house.] Seems like a decent house, or whatever. No big whoop. Walk to Whole Foods. |
407 Luna Vista Drive, Village of the Hills, TX - $694,500. 4,752 square feet. Built in 2002. "Village Of The Hills"? Is that for real? Basically, this is in Lakeway. There are tons of recently built houses in this price range in this area. This one (on the other side of the lake) is super, as is this one, down in Driftwood. That first one, in Volente, appears to have sold. Volente is the new Lakeway, in case you didn't get the memo. |

that first castle looks just like the one huck lives in
Those first two houses are fucking ridiculous. In a completely awesome way.
Checked out the first house's description on the austinhomesearch.com listing that's linked to.
To the realtor: You've described the house as antebellum. Um, no. Antebellum means before the war. The Civil War. Pretty sure that one was over by 1895. You had it right with Queen Anne Victorian. Stick with that, lose the "antebellum" description, and you'll be golden.
