Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show

The following is a weekly column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her Friday evenings on KUT 90.5FM, 11pm-3am. --The Editors

Greetings to you, sufferers of post-Thanksgiving stress disorder. Come, now! You know exactly what I’m talking about. Were you one of the brave souls up this morning waiting at some random department store before the grand 5 a.m. opening to get your holiday shopping on?

Not me. “Black Friday” is not my cup of tea, thanks. I’m allergic to people. But I made sure to rise before the crack of 11 a.m. today to do some planning for tonight. While I did take the day off, as many of my more fortunate peeps were able to do, I’m not taking a break from providing you with late night musical entertainment on KUT. When you’re winding down from the shopping apocalypse, settle in with a brewski or a glass of vino and have the stereo set to 90.5 on the FM.

My playlist this evening includes music from bands that are part of a stellar line-up in a show that will surely be a blast. The Onion, which, as you know, is America’s finest news source, is presenting its spectacular Corporate Expansion Celebration, a free – that’s right, FREE – extravaganza taking place next Thursday night at Emo’s, starting at around 9 p.m.

Have you seen the list of local talent? You can’t use the cost of admission to avoid this one, people. For absolutely FREE you get to enjoy music from Sound Team, The Lemurs, The IV Thieves and Tacks, the Boy Disaster on Emo’s outside stage. Inside, super lady Rachael Goldstar and DJ Kidindie will spin fabulous sounds with the accompaniment of Cordial Squad, featuring the Onion DJs. Plus, there’s insanity to be had with the fantastically absurd rants and raves of comedian Eugene Mirman. This will be beyond interesting, let me tell you.

I’d also like to mention a gig coming up a bit sooner: My playlist will include the lovely stylings of The Lovely Sparrows, who’ll grace Emo’s inside stage tonight with Evangelicals and featuring Jimmy Flemion of The Frogs headlining the bill.

Looks like it’s another short column this week, kids, but there is plenty to do and plenty of music to be listened to. You know the schedule: 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., on KUT 90.5. As RoboCop would say, thank you for your cooperation.

i think that's one of the best line-ups i seen for a free show since SxSW

  • Declan McManus

    Yes.

  • grover

have you ever even heard tacks, declan?

  • Declan McManus

Keat: I just walked by Emo's on the way back to the homeless shelter and I didn't see any people standing on line yet.

I can only surmise that you were talking about a theoretical line that may or may not appear on Thursday night. The Onion and slow bouncers, not the music, will be the reason for any appearance of this so-called line.

I don't think Sound Team is relevant enough to be considered for a position with Pitchfork.

JL: Glad to hear your drums are a-working. Make sure you always wear earplugs at shows to protect them.

  • JL

My eardrums are functionally sound, Mr McManus. I'm looking forward to The Onion launch party :-)!

  • keaton

I'm sure that any of the people in the line around the block for the party will be happy to take your place, McManus. Maybe you should go write for pitchfork.

  • Declan McManus

That Onion outside lineup is horrendous; Derivative pseudo-dance indie rock schlock is an affront to any person with fully functional ear drums.

  • Ted C

i hope the onion makes fun of kid indie.
