Cine Las Americas presents Letters from the Other Side

Cine Las Americas is hosting a special screening of the critically acclaimed Letters from the Other Side. The documentary on Mexican immigration was directed by Austinite Heather Courtney.
The free screening at the George Washington Carver Museum is open to the public and will feature a Q&A with women featured in the film, with a reception to follow. Beyond just a screening, the evening is a celebration of sorts, as the women from the film who will be in attendance were finally granted visitor visas eight months after being initially denied.
This screening is part of a regional tour with the film and the women to various communities in Texas and Mississippi. Sponsors of the Carver event include the Mexican Consulate, the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division, Cine Las Americas, the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice of the University of Texas School of Law, the Austin Film Society, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Casa Marianella, and Latino Public Broadcasting, with food specially prepared by Casa Chapala.
Letters from the Other Side, premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in January, screened at the South by Southwest International Film Festival (SXSW), and was funded by a Fulbright and grant from the Independent Television Service (ITVS). Courtney’s previous film, Los Trabajadores/The Workers, won the Audience Award at SXSW in 2001, and was broadcast nationally on the PBS series Independent Lens in 2003
