It was the winter of 1997. Toronto. Some big and atrocious-looking gallery on the edge of pig-windowed Chinatown. That’s where we first got to see the brilliance of Keith Haring up close. Well, “up close” isn’t all that necessary when the piece is thirty goddamn feet tall, but it was really there. In all it’s simplistic glory. Thoughtful. Angry. People with dog-heads and politics. You could almost touch it with your tongue it was so close and so fascinating. But they weren’t really into letting anyone mess with the works.
Stupid Canadians with their “rules” about fondling “art” with your “hands” or whatever.
While there’s no reason to try and actually touch any of the pieces themselves, you should be ex-fucking-static that AMOA downtown is exhibiting some of his pieces! Who knows which ones! Might be the naughty sets. One never knows.
You may have seen the AMOA downtown but didn’t even realize that it would ever be housing art of such continued significance. It’s black, really not well marked in any way, and unfortunately forgettable in almost every regard, no matter how hard they try.
Which makes it a PERFECT venue to host some of the most fantastic modern art to bust out of Alphabet City since, uh, since they started getting treated water there. Pollack, Basquait, Kruger, Sherman…

You mean Pollock and Basquiat, right? Someone's blog needs an editor.
My life needs an editor. The errors stay.
