Austinist Wanders Around the New IKEA Round Rock

We attended the press day preview of the new Round Rock IKEA store last week, where we had a chance to snack on an assortment of delectable Swedish cuisine before being given a tour of the new (and enormous) space.
Like every other IKEA we've ever visited—Frisco, Houston, Elizabeth, Emeryville, Covina, Taipei—the store is laid out as a series of showcase areas (Living Rooms, Wall Units, Media & Storage, Kitchens & Dining, etc.) that eventually lead to the "Marketplace" and Self-Serve Warehouse, where you'll do your actual shopping for textiles, lighting, Lack coffee tables and whatnot. Along the way is a sizeable 300-seat restaurant, among whose menu offerings are a 99-cent hot breakfast (scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon), shrimp sandwiches, and their signature nearly-as-good-as-Tasti-D-Lite frozen yogurt. Overall, the 250,000-square-foot store manages to be visually overwhelming without being physically restricting; being on a time crunch, the condensed tour that we took clocked in at just under half an hour, which still afforded us ample time, among myriad other distractions, to traipse through an IKEAlized sub-400-square-foot apartment and admire the $12.99 orchids in their indoor plants section.
As you're doubtlessly already aware, IKEA Round Rock officially opens tomorrow, Wednesday, November 15th, at 9am. To kick off their grand opening festivities, store manager Jeff O'Shaughnessy will perform a traditional Swedish log-sawing ceremony (for good luck), to be followed by speeches by various dignitaries from Round Rock, Williamson County, and the Swedish Consulate. They're also giving away loads of free stuff for those hardy souls willing to brave the lines:
- POÄNG Armchairs for the first 100 adults
- FAMNIG heart-shaped cushion toys for the first 100 children
- Random prize envelopes with IKEA Gift Cards ranging from $10 to $250 or coupons for free food for the first 2,500 people
- $10 IKEA Gift Cards for anyone with birthdays on November 15th (with proof)
Show up between November 15th and the 19th to enter a drawing for one of ten $1,000 gift cards -- they're also matching the total prizes with a donation to benefit the Williamson County Children's Advocacy Center.
Cocktail Party Information:
- The IKEA name derives from founder "Ingvar Kamprad, who grew up on a farm called Elmtaryd in the parish Agunnaryd in southern Sweden"
- IKEA carries their own, exclusive line of home appliances, designed by Whirlpool
- Over 450 million people visited an IKEA store last year
- IKEA Round Rock stocks over ten thousand different items and employs roughly 300 Central Texans
- In addition to the 50 in-store room settings, IKEA Round Rock contains three, fully-furnished model homes
- Beyond being a purveyor of affordable design, IKEA has an impressive international reputation as both one of the best companies to work for (FORTUNE, Working Mother). And they're green friendly, to boot.
