Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show
The following is a column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her Friday evenings on KUT 90.5FM, from 11pm-3am. -- The Editors
Hello, fellow music lovers!
I must admit, I’m a bit disheartened by the nearly 90-degree temperatures
plaguing the month of November in our city. I’d like to order a cold
front, please, with some turning leaves on the side.
Oh well. At least I can supply
the ear with plenty of cool groovy tunes on The Laurie Show this evening.
Our adventure tonight will include music that compliments the art of
fashion.
Rob Jasinski, proprietor of Cream Vintage on Guadalupe and more than familiar
with the aforementioned combination, always reminds me that music and
fashion go hand in hand, from the downplayed mellow hipster styles to
the extravagant, outrageous rocker clothing. Music is definitely playing
a high-profile role in all the fabulous fashion-related activity going
on this weekend and next, coupled with rather impressive local and visiting
music talent.
First, there’s Stitch, taking the Austin Music Hall by storm
tomorrow, with an endless array of fantastic artisans showcasing clothing,
jewelry, accessories and anything lovely that your heart desires. On
the Stitch music bill is Irving, from Los Angeles, so I’ll definitely
be playing a little something from their latest CD, “Death In the
Garden, Blood On the Flowers”.
Next weekend, it’s Team Fabrication
4 at the Parish on 6th St. (hosted by none other than yours
truly, believe it or not), featuring gorgeous ensembles galore by the Team Fab crew. Local artists Loxsly, Clap!Clap!, and ’Til We’re Blue
Or Destroy will
take to the stage to keep the party going. More local music to fit into
tonight’s playlist!
In other music related news:
Lomita’s got a gig tonight at Trophy’s on
South Congress with The Black and Horse + Donkey on the bill. Lomita
will also be at the Parish tomorrow for the CD release performance of For Her And The
Snow.
Crawling
With Kings, Moonlight Towers, and Youngmond Grand are all on a fantastic 8-band bill
tomorrow, the 1st Annual KOOP East Side Rock Marathon, at Red’s
Scoot in on E. 4th St. It’s a mere $5 at the door, and
all proceeds benefit KOOP 91.7. They’re working on moving to their
new location in Cherrywood, on the Eastside. I support my community
radio peeps all around, kids. Check it.
You have a date with End of An Ear on South 1st St., you know.
There’s a nice instore double bill this Sunday I’d like to recommend,
featuring Headlights, from Illinois, and local artists Pompeii. Great stuff.
Last but not least, some good
news on the horizon, if I may do some shameless self-promotion, please:
I will soon have the opportunity to produce my segment, Before the Break, for the KUT 90.5 website on a more
full time basis. I’m happy to pick up the pace because it was certainly
lagging, but by the end of November, I can kick it into full gear again.
I truly appreciate all the support I’ve received for that special
project. We’re finally getting some recognition for it! The latest
installment: Peel. Enjoy! And thanks again to everyone
for their patience.
It’s a weekend chock-full of music goodies. And don’t forget to join me this evening, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., on KUT 90.5. As RoboCop would say, thank you for your cooperation.
