Bhangra, a dance form from the state of Punjab, is arguably one of the most exciting and audience-participant friendly of the many Indian dances. As commonplace on the streets or during a wedding as it might be in a Bollywood flick, the Bhangra employs a Dhol drum backbeat set to assorted Indian instruments. This Saturday, Saheli Austin, a non-profit that aids Asian families dealing with domestic violence, brings the world of Bhangra and Bollywood to the capitol city with a benefit featuring music from Govinda and DJ Thebain.
The former specializes in electronica-tinged lounge music, underscored by exotic beats from around the world; they're often spectacular amalgamations of visual and physical artistic expression. DJ Thebain, with his deft employment of Arabic tones, is no stranger to world beats, either. Also on the bill are the wonderfully named Flying Paneer Sisters, a not-so-official take on Bollywood’s limitless song and dance. The Sisters convey the bright colors and painstaking moves of your favorite Hindi musical, with routines set to Bollywood pop hits meant to entice and encourage participation from the attendees. We bet they’ll look good on the dance floor.
