Austinist Preview and Giveaway: Ladyhawk at Emo's
Because we feel like you don’t have enough Canadian music in your life, we’d like to propose to you yet another opportunity to get your Canuck on . This Sunday night at Emo’s, Vancouver denizens Ladyhawk will bring some genuine, riff-heavy Canadian goods and prove, once again, that Neil Young’s influence knows no limits.
Ladyhawk play the kind of guitar rock that Canada would be famous for, if only the border extended far enough south to encompass Boise, Idaho and its favorite sons, Doug Martsch and Built to Spill. Instead, they stick out from their Canadian peers, playing a heavier variety of rock ‘n’ roll than anything you’d expect from the likes of Broken Social Scene, and far too morose for the New Pornographers crowd. Indeed, Ladyhawk are very much an aberration in the north-of-the-border music scene. Listening to them, we find ourselves wishing, for their benefit, that they were spawned in the deep south rather than the cold climes of British Columbia.
If their choice of openers is any indication, though, Ladyhawk seem to have no problem acknowledging their warm weather style. The strong supporting cast begins with local experimental rockers Ume and Experimental Aircraft, well on their way to post-rock stardom a la Explosions in the Sky. Heading up the openers are Anaheim-based garage rock up-and-comers The Willowz. All over the map and all over the spectrum, this lineup surely has enough for everyone. Get their early and experience a little bit of everything.
