News Bits!

bookcrop.jpg

  • We hardly think Wal-Mart will help revitalize anything. Say goodbye to the little shops in North Austin. Save Terra Toys!
  • Dunkin' Donuts better step on the bandwagon. They're going to lose their biggest market to some greasy burgers.
  • Anticipate headlines that read: Murders, Pedophiles and Stalkers on the Rise in Japan. They're getting MySpace.
  • Soccer moms not the US Military will soon invade Iraq. Its safer than the suburbs.
  • The FCC has decided that it’s okay to say shit on the air, but only if it’s a news show. Does the Daily Show count?
  • Austin failed to turn out for Kinky, but on the bright side, you can get your Jewish Cowboy action figures at clearance prices.
  • Politics, Texas style. Really. Sam Houston did it, too.

A well-designed (urban footprint) big box could indeed revitalize the area - Northcross as it stands is just a crime magnet waiting to happen. Unfortunately, it's Target, not Wal-Mart, that's shown willingness to adapt its big-box formula to urban areas (Wal-Mart won't waver from the acres of surface parking and one-story large footprint model).

I should have probably read the article first; but I still don't buy it. Target has proved they know how to walk the walk; Wal-Mart is still just talking the talk.

When did spitting on cops' burgers become not good enough? Why waste perfectly good green on such ingrates?

That'll teach me to comment before reading. I still say Target's proved they walk the walk; Wal-Mart is still all talk (those examples they cite are laughably non-urban: Howell Mill Road in Atlanta is actually Allandale-esque - i.e. 1950s suburban; NOT central-city).
