Call us smut snobs, but we never could get into the fake blonde hair/fake tan/fake boobs look that has dominated the world of pornography for the last couple decades. Maybe it has something to do with having a hard time finding the real beach blonde underneath, or maybe it was just that we wouldn’t have given said beach blonde the time of day anyway – nor, let’s be honest, would she have had much to do with us. So imagine our delight when we came across a certain coffee table book a few years back featuring a bunch of girls with black hair, painful looking piercings, and badass tattoos. They looked like the girls we had our sights set on back in high school. True, those girls wouldn’t talk to us either, but at least they were worth fantasizing about. Thus began our paid membership to fandom of Suicide Girls. Now something of a household name, SuicideGirls has produced a clothing line, DVDs, videos, calendars, and more than a little controversy. They are taking their show on the road, and will be appearing on the outside stage at Emo's tonight.
Begun in Portland, Oregon in 2001, the idea allegedly sprang from a desire to “see hot punk rock girls naked.” That desire turned out to be widespread, and the popularity of the website took off. Within a couple of years, strip clubs in Portland, notorious for their anything-goes take on, ahem, “live adult entertainment,” were featuring regular SuicideGirls nights, with all the raunchiness and then some of the regular performers. If their tour videos or, for that matter, Texas decency laws, are any indication, tonight’s performance will be somewhat toned down from that standard, but don’t expect an innocent night of good ol’ family fun. There will likely be whips, thongs, blindfolds, and any number of other household goods put into effect. This is not, in short, first-date material.
And, just as Playboy has great interviews, an evening with SuicideGirls wouldn’t be complete without some good wholesome rock ‘n’ roll so you can tell your significant other that it isn’t about the nudity. Local rockers Deguello will be opening up the set with some punked-out southern rock, followed by Japanese riot grrrls Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re. Remember that band that was playing in Kill Bill before Uma wasted the Crazy 88s? Yeah. They sound nothing like them. But you get the idea. After that, the girls of our punk rock dreams take the stage for an evening of entertainment unlike anything we’re likely to see at Emo’s again for some time.

Too bad, if you look past the "we’re 100% women owned and operated" PR machine, you’ll find that two dudes co-own Suicide Girls LLC. And what’s up with the models only getting a flat fee of $300 for their photos, which SG owns 100% of? So much for empowerment I guess.

Like I said, more than a little controversy. Bust Magazine did a highly critical expose on it a few months ago.
What a great show!
