Sno Cone Stand Gives Way To High Rise Condo

Tigersblood and Wedding Cake with Cream? Fuzzy Navel with Hill Country Berry? Banana and Chocolate with Cream? Root Beer with Ice Cream on the bottom?

Whatever your favorite may be, get it soon, because your friendly neighborhood snow cone stand, Sno Beach will shave its last ice today.

On the corner of Butler Street and South Lamar just north of Barton Springs Road stands this premiere ice & syrup institution of Austin, whose owners have been serving Barton Springs swimmers, Hike & Bike runners and truant high school students alike for fourteen years. It's run by retired Austinites Don and Connie Powell, who enlist an army of high school and college girls known for their good looks* and even better snow cone skills.

Like so many things in Austin, Sno Beach is being forced to relocate due to another South Lamar high-rise apartment to be built on the block between Toomey and Butler.

No word yet on where they will move to, but they will continue their two other stands at The Fiesta Supermarket on 38th Street and The Cash America Pawn on Guadalupe and 34th Street. It looks like the cold front has held off for a couple more days, making it perfect for one more quick stop after work.

Sno Beach
S. Lamar Blvd. and Butler St.
12pm - 7pm

*We're not even joking, have you noticed that every single girl that works there is good looking? And you'll never see a guy working there.

Sno Beach had to move from Barton Springs Saloon (for a variety of reasons, which we're trying to clear up so we can post something about it).

Now they have relocated to the grassy area west of Wanfu Too, where they sell pipes during ACL Fest.

Sno-Beach has been back for about a month now I believe.

we're up and running at barton springs and robertElee in the wan fu tu parking lot - weather pending, that is.

survival of the fittest never tasted so sweet; darwin would surely have cavities.

Sno-Beach is back. Barton Springs Saloon parking lot.

the silver trailer at P. Terry's is back

and im sure its going to stay there

personally i think Snow Beach should get permission from AISD and relocate to the AHS parking lot or under the town lake bridge by AHS

...as an Austin High student myself i beleive it would get lots of business both from those from the lake, trail, and of course the students would much ENJOY the treat!!

No! This must not stand. I need my snowcone fix!

Inside* info has it that this is a Michael Jordan/Jay-Z type of retirement. Stay tuned for the comeback, Stew.

UPDATE: The silver trailer that P. Terry's put up got hit by a car after a wreck on Butler and Lamar. The trailer was ruined and taken away...coincidence or conspiracy?

    Sno-Beach RIP.

Snow Beach or shall I say Ho-Beach or Sno-Bitch was excellent, especially when it free via the hook up. Those girls will have to find another job (see Exposé) and hopefully the other locations will stay put.

The girls, Don and Connie will have to make do for now making tax-free income with their two other locations (see tax evasion).

It was always a dream of mine to call 7 on Your Side on those mofos about their sexual discriminating hiring practices and settle out of court for a lifetime supply of free sno-cones.

But what will all those new condo owners do when they need a shaved ice?

  • Grape Ape

This is true. Let us remember the travels of Cedar Door.

  • The benefit of having an iconic business which has wheels on it is that you can just find another parking lot. Maybe we should sneak downtown and install some wheels on Las Manitas?

PT dropped the ball on this one. With the kind of equity that Sno-Beach has/had, seems like he would've relished from some positive associated business as opposed to coming off like an ass and introducing an imitation stand. Maybe some graffiti artist will tag it, frequently.

It was odd enough seeing that weird Sno-cone stand open up just south of the Del Tierra shop. Anyhow, I'm going to miss Sno-Beach.

I have some friends that work at Sno Beach...I was told that Don Powell asked to move to their parking lot, but P. Terry's firmly refused. If anything, putting up their own stand is a clever business move.

  • Grape Ape

I'm going to venture a guess and say that P. Terry's actually talked to them about this. Hence why they didn't open their stand when they could have - last spring. Better yet, I'll ask P. himself next time I see him; he's not that type of person.
