The following is a column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her on KUT 90.5FM, Friday evenings from 11pm-3am. -- The Editors
Greetings, ghoulies! I must
admit that this happens to be my favorite time of the year, which
means I just may wreak a bit of havoc on the ol’ airwaves this evening.
With plenty of helpful recommendations
from some of my KUT peeps, including music director Jeff McCord,
Texas Music Matters producer David Brown, assistant music
director Kory Cook and music assistant Lauren Burton,
I’m compiling a list of tunes that should be suitable for the season.
Expect to hear a few creepy delights in between all the fabulous local
talent I feature on my humble show.
Perhaps “Scary Monsters”
from David Bowie? “Spooky Girlfriend” by Elvis Costello?
Roky Erickson doing “I Walked With A Zombie”? Music from my
favorite gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows? Or…maybe…the
theme from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”? (Come to think
of it, I was the only girl who had the raging crush on Anthony Perkins.
Hmm...)
I may bring in some personal
favorites of yesteryear – music that, frankly, I play all year round,
from Bauhaus and Siouxsie and
the Banshees. Yes, it sort of brings out the old-school goth in
me. That, and a longing for Hammer films. Just the mere mention
of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing makes me all sentimental.
(sniff, sniff) Or anything with Vincent Price…true family entertainment!
Of course, the evening would
not be complete without featuring music by my favorite artistes of horror
and crazy good times, the White Ghost Shivers! They’re preparing
for one heck of a vaudeville extravaganza with their annual Hallowe’en
Ball, Flim Flam Follies. This year’s madness and debauchery
commences at The Oaks out in Manor, with The Theater Fire,
The Peculiar Pretzelmen, and St. Idiot Collective stirring
up the spirits. For details and directions, you can visit the Shivers’
website or MySpace profile. A frightfully good time is guaranteed for
all!

Say…I had no idea that zombies
made such great music. I’ll play a track or two from the latest zombified
rock opera offered by The Unbearables, “Just One Bite.” They’ll
feature quite a few of these tunes as they assemble their Zombie
Rock Orchestra at the Victory Grill on E. 11th
St. this Hallowe’en, sharing the stage with Darling New Neighbors
and Damage Pants. Brains for everyone!
Apparently, the insanity is
abundant this Samhain. Imagine Mr. Lewis and the Funeral 5 performing
Alice Cooper songs at the Beerland Hallowe’en celebration, or
Midori Umi shape-shifting into Led Zeppelin during Sunday’s
pre-Hallowe’en bash at Club DeVille. Ooooo, scary!
But isn’t that the way we like it? Remember, children, join me from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. into the wee dead hours of the night, on KUT 90.5. As my sweetheart Norman Bates used to say: “We all go a little mad…sometimes.”
