And the Intel Building Shall Fall

Sometime this fall, the city is finally going to take steps to demolish that half-assed Intel building. The eyesore has been stagnant for so long, we can't remember what was there before it existed. Probably a Liberty Lunch or Armadillo equivalent that became prey to evergrowing corporate needs to just build something. Intel pulled the plug on construction in 2001 with no intention to complete it. IntelShellAdamRice.jpg

Now we know there were a gajillion cool things that could have been done wiith that structure as it stands, but the U.S. General Services Administration has decided to make it a new Federal Courthouse (see #26).

Everyone seems to be elated that the horrendous guts of a building-that-never-was are going to make way for a much sleeker, cooler structure. Something else Austin can be proud of.

So you want to help speed up the process? Want to initiate an explosion or release a wrecking ball right into that thing? The Austin Parks Foundation is selling $10 raffle tickets for a chance to be that person that pushes the button of destruction. No worries, the money is going toward funding improvements for the adjacent Republic Square Park, not new hardhats for the construction crew.
Pick up some tickets online or go to the next DANA Block party on November 8th.

Wasn't the site a car dealership at one time? I think it's the location where a car dealer used to stand on the curb with a camel on a leash to get attention.

Yep...another example of Austin's quirkiness down the tubes. Wonder what happened to the Camel.

I think the city should leave the shell of an Intel building standing as a reminder of what happens when irrational booms turn to busts. Of course, we could get a new half-built reminder in the next few years as the condo boom goes busts. Wonder if all of those new towers will be completed?

How funny. I had this vague memory--so vague that I thought I might have imagined it--of seeing a camel at 6th & Lamar one day. This was the same week I saw a peacock on Oltorf. I hadn't lived here very long, and it freaked me out a bit.

On another note, I think it's odd that people think the city has anything to do with this.
