Easily indie rock's most well-read bunch, The Decemberists returned this year with The Crane Wife, their follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed LP, Picaresque (as well as their bonus EP, Picaresqueties, a nifty collection of b-sides). Frontman Colin Meloy imbues the record with his signature storytelling acumen, narrating esoteric tales of airships, Civil War romances, and Belfast terrorists while managing intricate and often exhilarating rhythm sequences. Produced in part by Death Cab's Chris Walla, The Crane Wife is one of the band's most triumphant works to date.
Now on tour to support their major label debut, The Decemberists have teamed up with Filter magazine to produce an official tour 'zine, along the vein of the recent Silversun Pickups/Viva Voce project. They're linking up blogging correspondents in each of the cities along the way, so that you can to follow Colin and his buddies as they trek around the country. We'll be providing coverage for their Austin show.
