AFF Sneak Preview: Death of a President

That is the premise behind Gabriel Range’s new film Death of a President. The film blends archival footage with narrative elements to form a fake documentary look at the supposed events surrounding the assassination of President George W. Bush.

“It's a striking premise which may be seen as highly controversial," said Range. “But it's a serious film which I hope will open up the debate on where current US foreign and domestic policies are taking us."

Tonight will be the first US screening and is open to the general public. As a bit of delicious irony, the film, which is open to the public, will be screened tonight at the Texas State History Museum. Austin Film Festival Badge holders will have priority access, followed by film pass holders and then individual ticket holders.

The film has, not surprisingly, already stirred up some major controversy, with two of the country’s largest theatre chains, Regal and Cinemark, refusing to release the British-made film.

“Each year we strive to present movies that explore new territories in film narrative," said Barbara Morgan, AFF co-founder and executive director. “Death of a President is one of the most innovative and daring pictures to be shown at the Festival in some time.”
