AFF Screens: Special
Since his debut in 1992's Zebrahead, Michael Rappaport has been very busy delivering memorable performances in a wide variety of interesting films. However, he has rarely been tapped to play the lead – with the strange exception of his currently popular but destined to be forgotten sitcom. In his latest film, Special, Rappaport is finally the leading man again and his performance here is so genuine, funny and pitch perfect, that it seems a shame he has been relegated to supporting roles for so long.
Special focuses on a few weeks in the life of Les, a socially awkward parking lot attendant and lifelong comic book geek. Les volunteers for a clinical study to test an experimental new drug called Special. The drug is designed to eliminate self-doubt in the people who take it. Once he starts popping the pills, Les not only is free of self-doubt, he finds that he is actually developing superpowers. He can read minds, run through walls and even fly - if only a few inches off the ground. Taking inspiration from the superhero comics he loves so much, Les decides the only moral thing to do is use his powers to fight evil. He quits his job, concocts a superhero outfit and heads out onto the street to fight crime. The only problem is...the super powers are all in his head.
Rappaport’s performance anchors the clever script and the result is a sparse film that is sad, funny and thought-provoking. If you're looking for an indictment of the pharmaceutical industry, there is plenty here to keep you busy. Superhero fans will also find a lot to enjoy. But the real core of this story is the inner turmoil of one very average man who really wants to make a difference - but can't.
