Austinist Show Preview: Mark Kozelek at The Parish

If you haven't heard of Mark "Melancholy" Kozelek, there's not necessarily something wrong with you; we're not trying to make anyone feel silly here. What you deserve is friendly pity, a lengthy bear hug, some chamomile tea, and a toasty copy of any album he's ever made. Preferably, his band Red House Painters' first effort, after which you can begin feverishly seeking out the rest of his catalog like a Philly crackhead.

Kozelek and his groups, past and present, seem to hide in plain sight in the music world, which is to say fans discover them in different, usually wonderful, ways. So don't be too hard on yourself, slugger.

Now if you're already a devotee you probably know that Kozelek's post-RHP solo output has been confounding, to say the least. No less than two albums of AC/DC covers (an EP and an LP, to be exact), one tribute album to John Denver, a live "Christmas" disc, and some work on a few compilations. Don't get us wrong, it's all awesome, but considering that his most recent album as Sun Kil Moon is all Modest Mouse covers, you must understand the dismay his fans feel over not getting their fix of his own work. After a decade of incredible RHP songs followed by Sun Kil Moon''s infallible debut album Ghosts of The Great Highway, you can't just cut us off. Where's the new material, Mark? A songwriter as gifted as you has no right to tease your fans like this. How about an EP? Just a little taste? Please?

Ok, ok. We'll calm down. We're better now.

Anyway, perhaps the best place to catch new morsels is when Kozelek plays in an intimate setting. Well, no club in Austin screams "intimate setting" like The Parish, which is exactly where he's playing Wednesday night, along with Austin songstress Pink Nasty. What's more, your buds at Austinist want to hook you up with some tickets. Just fill in the form!

Our winner is very happy. Yay!
