While I agree that the 2003 remake was completely unnecessary (why remake a classic that didn't need to be improved upon in the first place?), I still managed to enjoy the approach used for the remake, which had great art direction and moments of genuine tension and fear. This pointless prequel has a few good moments with R. Lee Ermey but little else going for it in my opinion. I wasn't remotely unnerved or concerned for the characters at any point (always a bad sign for a horror movie), and since it's a prequel to the remake you already know going in that nothing of interest will happen to Leatherface and his "family" -- so what on earth is the point other than to cash in yet again on this franchise? I'm glad its opening weekend showed a drop of some 33% over the 2003 film, and hope that poor word of mouth kills this one next weekend for good.
