Some people may shy away from Infamous, thinking there is no need to see two movies in one year about the complex character of Truman Capote. That would be a mistake. This film is getting favorable reviews, which is quite a feat considering it must compete in the shadow of a virtuoso performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the first biopic. And, the movie was filmed in Austin. So what more do you want? How about Isabella Rossellini? Ok, done.
For those completely unfamiliar with the story, Infamous takes a look at the tortured life of Southern writer cum New York socialite Truman Capote and his coverage of the brutal murders committed by Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, and their subsequent trial and execution.

"Infamous" adds one more juicy ingredient. The movie is based on George Plimpton's oral biography, "Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career." So you get not only barbed "interviews" with the likes of author Gore Vidal (Michael Panes) but parties and boozy lunches with Babe Paley (Sigourney Weaver), wife of CBS chairman William Paley; Neapolitan princess Marella Agnelli (Isabella Rossellini); socialite Slim Keith (Hope Davis); and Vogue editor Diana Vreeland (Juliet Stevenson). The movie even opens with Gwyneth Paltrow as Peggy Lee, singing and breaking down over "What Is This Thing Called Love?" That question haunts the rest of the movie.
The Austin Film Society is offering an early look at the film tonight at the Arbor theatre. Tickets are $5 for AFS Members and $7 for non-members and can be purchased on the AFS website.
