Last Week to BAM!

This week, ProArts Collective's Black Arts Movement Festival concludes with more amazing works by more amazing performers. Though there's a motherload of theatre open and opening in A-town right now, we think you should give these gems some serious consideration when you're planning your artful outings for the next few days.
Note: Tickets are $10, door only / $35-$65 via festival pass, online only.
Dance: ACC Dance, Dallas Black Dance, and UpRise! Productions
We were thoroughly wowed by UpRise's performance at this year's Frontera Fest, for which they garnered a Best of Fest award. With a combo of slam poetry, dance, extremely intense stage combat, and a martial-arts-ish form called capoeira da rua, this should prove to be a unique, powerful performance. Throw in some great dance talent from Austin and Dallas, and you've got a night to remember.

Theatre: Fabulation, or the Re-Education of Undine by Lynn Nottage
This comedic, social satire is "about an ambitious and haughty African-American woman, Undine Barnes-Calles, whose husband suddenly disappears after embezzling all of her money. Pregnant and on the brink of social and financial ruin, Undine...faces the challenge of transforming her setbacks into small victories in a battle to reaffirm her right to be." --New Dramatists

Theatre: Zell Miller III and M.U.G.A.B.E.E. - Double Feature
- The Mix-tape, Theater Style written & performed by Zell Miller III is something of a greatest hits blend of Miller's recent work, with some new stuff thrown in for good measure. We've consistently raved about Miller in the past. He's an incredible performer, and this is your chance to catch up on his work.
- Batteries in the Killing Machine written & performed by Maurice Turner & Carlton Turner, the two Mississippians who make up M.U.G.A.B.E.E., uses hip-hop, spoken word, and soul music to tell a story: "We follow two brothers, Seed and Prophet, reuniting after 15 years of separation. Together they encounter a world laced with capitalism, betrayal, genocide, racism, religion, enslavement and murder." --Turner World Around (check out the great photo).
