Crush-Out Austin: Crystal Hoffman, Austin Java Girl

austinjava_crush.jpgIt's the Saturday Hatha instructor at YogaYoga South, or the rocker guy with spikey hair at Walgreens. It's one of the Lone Star Rollergirls, or your favorite downtown gallery owner.

It's your local secret crush.

After some rather arduous searching/sleuthing (dang, y'all!), our recurring interview series continues with "the hot blonde" at Austin Java on Barton Springs.

She's a dog person, a Chai person and has a penchant for southern rock. It's this edition's featured crush: Crystal Hoffman.

So, Crystal. What do you do when you aren't working at Austin Java?

I mostly hang out at RedBud Trail with my dog. It is the best place to read and watch all of the dogs play. It's kind of like dog utopia.

What was the last book or periodical you read?

The last book I read was Jitterbug Perfume...now I'm reading Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut.

So. Here is the required annoying record/album question. Tell us about your three all-time favorites and a recent find.

As for albums, it's hard to say...but [my] favorite bands are The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors and The Allman Brothers. My all-time favorite is The Grateful Dead.

What was the last thing you saw that really made you think?

I just watched this DVD 911 Mysteries. Watch it. It will make you think too.

Do you have any siblings?

One older sister and one younger brother.

Where's your hometown?

Panhandle, TX. Yes, it's a town.

Where did you live before Austin?

I lived in Amarillo... happy to be in Austin.

Do you have a favorite eatery?

Veggie Heaven or Uchi. Oh yeah, or Fonda San Miguel.

What's your favorite mascot and why?

[My] favorite mascot would have to be the Panther, [laughs] because I was the mascot in Panhandle. Good times.

What's a guilty pleasure of yours?

I watch Animal Planet a lot. I love all of the shows. It's getting a little ridiculous.

What else would you like us to know? This is where you can say if you are single, etc.

Nothing else I can really say.

Intriguing. How 'bout this - what is your favorite drink at Austin Java?

Favorite drink at Java would be the Chai - it's so good.

Cool. Thanks, Crystal.

Next up: Will Austinist interview "the red-haired guy who works the counter at the Whole Foods" or "the hot Italian-looking stud working the counter at FoodFood"? It all depends on what the men behind the curtain counters have to say about it. Counters and food and men, oh my!

Is there someone you'd like to know a little more about? If you can't quite screw up the courage to chat them up, email us, and we might help you get the deedles. Awright!

This is my favorite column. Uniquely Austin and uniquely fun. Admittedly this particular crush-out is a bit flat, but isn't that the point? Sometimes your crush-out is cooler than you ever could have imagined, and other times.... Well, other times she turns out to be a gal who likes good ol' music, good ol' books, and good ol' conspiracy theories.

Keep it up, May. Keep it up.

I like this column. Totally agree with pd. Ignore the haters.

  • odam

    i am feelin you, anon.

i am really feelin you, May.

Crap Pants, this link is going to change your life:

I'm with pd -- these are the columns that make Austinist unique and keep me coming back.

    This bit has become stale.

Why can’t you be mature enough to approach your crush in public if you are that interested? Don't make all of us suffer your insecurities via the Austinist.

i feel ya. she sounds like a very private person, and i can respeck that, but i don't have to like it. thanks again for the hard work.

  • pd

in my opinion, it's columns like these that seperate "small town" Austin from any other of the -ist cities

    werd up, anon!

we provide our interviewees with the opportunity to provide a pic, their name and their sangle/coupled status...hell - they can link us to their myspace account too, if that is their thing.

if they decline any of those questions/requests, we respeck, you feel me?

p.s. that is way stone cold on Star Lazer force.

p.p.s. i'm telling everyone you solved rubik's cube by taking the stickers off.

  • anon

This was my crush. Thanks for finding her, Austinist. Now for the complaints - No picture?!? And you didn't even find out if she's single?!? To quote David St. Hubbins, "What's the point?"

If you were my friend in junior high, and I asked you to pass Crystal a note, well, let's just say you wouldn't be coming to my party at Star Lazer Force.

    >>The REAL question is why is this person being interviewed? Snooze.

The REAL answer can be found by waking up and reading the article. It's a recurring column where the author seeks out and interviews people who are the crush of an anonymous someone else.

"Is there someone you'd like to know a little more about? If you can't quite screw up the courage to chat them up, email us, and we might help you get the deedles."

  • Why?

Well, it's just as closeminded to accept the "answers" we've been fed by the media and government as it is to assume it was all a hoax, so you guys are just as ridiculous as the conspiracy theorist.

The REAL question is why is this person being interviewed? Snooze.

  • Edward

To paraphrase Scott Adams, I *wish* the impression that the fate of the world is being decided on daily basis by a bunch of idiots was an illusion perpetrated by some secret cabal. Unfortunately, I don't think we're that lucky.

  • but...Tom Robbins? Grateful Dead? Dogtopia? How do i not know this woman?

  • Tiffany

Because I don't think it's OK to leave the 9-11 conspiracy theories unchallenged, here's an article that might *actually* make Ms. Hoffman think.
