Today Is HAAM Benefit Day; Go Shopping

Some people think that being a professional musician is the best job in the world, and most of the time musicians probably think so, too... until they sprain a wrist or their kid gets the flu and they wind up paying $4,932 out-of-pocket. Live music being sort of a freelance occupation, it doesn't attract many healthcare providers willing to carry the extraordinary financial burden of unregulated US healthcare.

Enter the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. HAAM provides medical and dental services, at minimal cost, to over 450 professional musicians in Travis County. And Mayor Will Wynn has declared today to be the first annual HAAM Benefit Day, with businesses all over Austin donating 5% or more of the day's earnings to keep the organization running, including Whole Foods, Waterloo Records, Guero's, Amy's, BookPeople, Thundercloud, and so on. If you were planning on shopping or eating out today, chances are you'll be contributing to the goodness, and if you weren't, well, why not?
