Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show

The following is a weekly column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her on KUT 90.5FM, Friday nights from 11pm-3am! -- The Editors

Far too much going on in the weeks ahead, but technically, staying busy keeps me out of trouble. Right?

Well…it’s a good theory.

Hello again, music peeps! I’m compelled to begin this column with self-promotional frivolousness, but what the heck. Keep in mind that next Friday, I won’t be on the air because I’ll be getting raucous and rowdy with the wonderful cast and crew of “Inside A Broken Clock: A Tom Waits Peepshow,” October 5, 6 and 7 at the Austin Elks Lodge at 700 Dawson Rd. Be sure to visit the website for details and ticket info: www.brokenclockcabaret.com. But tonight, bet on hearing some Tom Waits for inspiration. ‘What’s he building in there?’

Feel like getting extra groovy this weekend? The way to do it is to see the fabulous DJ Sue as she presents the Fuzz Club at Beerland on Saturday, featuring live performances by the Sons of Hercules. This is a real treat; Sue, a former Austinite, is flying in from L.A. for this gig, so you don’t want to miss the party. The Sons are on my playlist tonight – featuring Kory Cook on the drums, my fellow KUT peep. Drummers! Nothing but trouble! I’ll also play groovy tunes from The Ugly Beats and The Dolly Partners in honor of Sue’s visit. Far out, man.

Do you know whose album I’m falling madly in love with? The Lemurs. I can’t get enough of it, so it’s making the rounds on the playlist tonight. The kids have a CD release shindig (they insist that this time, it’s for reals) with Loxsly, Clap!Clap! and The Lord Henry on October 14 at Emo’s. All great bands.

Anyone who knows Rosa Madriz, the brains and creativity behind Green Potato Ventures, knows that she is a mover and a shaker in this town, and she promotes and books bands like nobody’s business. So I always look to her for ideas for my playlist. Lately, I’ve been taking a gander at upcoming show dates at the Mohawk, where Rosa’s working her booking magic. Lots to choose from – Youngmond Grand tonight; She, Sir on October 5; Go Nova sharing the stage with The Channel, Black Before Red and The Eames Era on October 6; the Black Angels October 7; the Interest Kills October 13; and coming soon, Maneja Beto on the bill with Los Abandoned

You know the drill: 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., Friday nights, KUT 90.5. As RoboCop would say: Thank you for your cooperation.
