Josh Davis (aka DJ Shadow): began reinventing trip-hop while still in his teens, has amassed the largest collection of vinyl hip-hop in the universe, is buddies with Thom Yorke, and is coming to Austin this Sunday. Stubb's will host the genre-annihilating wunderkind in what is sure to be one of the more eclectic performances of the year.
A master of production and musical collage, DJ Shadow has impressed his way into collaborations with the aforementioned Radiohead frontman as well as Ian Moore, Richard Ashcroft, and Mike D. A few of these guests, as you might recall, appeared under the UNKLE moniker for 1998's star-studded Psyence Fiction. Yet Davis is a force to reckon with all by his lonesome, too. His 1996 album, Endtroducing..., is hailed by many as the high-water mark for late 90s trip-hop. Effortlessly fusing elements of soul, spoken word, jazz, rock, IDM, and anything else he could cull from his renowned addiction to record collecting.
This time around, the Shad is touring to tout his newest LP, The Outsider. Even more reluctant to be categorized than his previous work, it is a testament to Davis' vitality and intimate knowledge of sonic assemblage. With guest appearances by Kasabian and Christina Carter from Charalambides, you can bet your soft little t-shirt that it will have you both scratching your head and shaking your ass.
