Child Struck While Crossing I-35

Around 7 a.m. this morning, a 12-year-old boy was hit by a truck as he tried to cross North I-35 near the 8900 block, apparently in an attempt to take a shortcut across the freeway to reach a bus stop. He has been taken to Austin Children's Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. The child's name has not been released, and charges will likely not be filed against the driver.

From the Statesman Blotter:

Investigators said the boys were trying to run all the way across six lanes of congested rush hour traffic when a Ford F-150 pickup truck struck the boy at 35 to 40 miles per hour.

“I see those kids cross that street on the way to school every morning,” EMS paramedic Randy Treffer, who was at the scene, said. “The driver said he didn’t see them.”
