Austinist Reviews The Belmont and Nerds Out About New York Apples

tcf.jpg

A visit to The Belmont, the new bar and restaurant project by Sucky Lucky Lounge owner Matt Luckie, proved to be simultaneously unsatisfying and promising. It seems like no one can shut up about their Belmont excitement level. Admittedly, the staff was friendly and the retro interiors by ubiquitous downtown designer Joel Mozersky were, as usual, spot on. We were especially excited to try Executive Chef Ben Nathan's creations. Unfortunately, an amazing Sidecar on the rocks paired with delicious calamari swimming in black pepper and lemon flavors butted up against inconsistent bar service that ranged from incredibly competent (downstairs) to nervous and rude (upstairs.) We were further sideswiped by a decidedly subpar second round of drinks and a cheeseburger and fries served without lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard or mayo. Weird.

We left feeling dazed and confused, but we'll give The Belmont a second chance. We have a feeling someone's still working out the kinks.

At Central Market, the New York apples are in, and we intend to eat them voraciously and with gusto like the little fat nerdy New York apple fans we are. We all know that brown apples are the suck, so try giving them a little pineapple juice bath and a cool rinse after slicing if you're entertaining friends. If you're entertaining non-friends, you might investigate kicky alternatives to the pineapple juice rinse, just don't tell us about it.

  • That sounds cool if it's like you're saying.

I'm gonna have to check that out first. Also the thing with less than 8 is not that nice. But it's their choice of doing it that way.

all bark and no bite… the belmont's too cool for school. the missus and i went there for dinner last friday. arrived early -- 7:15! -- because they don't take reservations for parties less than 8. (convenient.) turns out the wait was only an hour and 45 minutes. i left l.a. for that sorta b.s. hook a brother and sister up with a reservation, oh mighty belmont, so we don’t have to get all dressed up for nothing.
