Former Governor Richards Had No Intention To Endorse Kinky

yellowdog.jpgApparently there has been a little scuttlebutt about whom Ann Richards was intending to endorse in the race for Governor of Texas. The children of the former governor released a statement today declaring that Ann had no intention of ever endorsing fellow smart-alec Kinky Friedman.

According to her children, "Ann Richards did not support Kinky Friedman for Governor of Texas nor endorse him before she died. She was very concerned about this election. She always voted a straight Democratic ticket."

That settles that.

Such so called "jokes" will always be open to interpretation, but what's very clear are his current politics. I'll say it again because I think it bares repeating:

KINKY ONLY VOTED ONCE IN THE LAST TWELVE YEARS AND THAT WAS FOR GEORGE W BUSH IN 2004!!!

He is advocating an even more xenophobic and myopic border policy than the Republicans and is for mandating (his version of) religion be brought into public schools.

I seriously wonder how much support Kinky would have if his supporters actually looked beyond his cult of personality and in to his actual platform. The real joke is going to be on them (and unfortunately everyone else too), when either

    A) Kinky gets elected and follows through with his platform

    or

    B) we get four more years of good hair Perry.

In all seriousness, are there any non neo-con Kinky supporters out there that can tell me why you are still planning on voting for this guy?

Kinky wrote this in the July 27, 2006 edition of High Times:

"Take it easy now, Kinkster," said Robert Young. "You've had a bad accident and you're in the Cedars of Tedium Hospital. Apparently you were run over by a bookmobile as you were coming out of a men's room in Denver, Colorado. To save your life we had to give you a transfusion using the blood of a person of the Negro persuasion."

    "That's moderately unpleasant," I said.

"Well, there's a good side of things, too," said Robert Young. "Your welfare checks should start coming in a few weeks, and your penis just grew twelve inches. Ha-ha-ha."

Until recently, I was a Kinky supporter, but I'm fairly uncomfortable with this comment. This wasn't 26 years ago. It was just a couple of months ago during Kinky's campaign. At a minimum, that shows poor judgment.

It's great to see a third party candidate mixing it up, but I wonder how many Kinky supporters are actually familiar with his platform. Government mandated prayer and the Ten Commandments in public schools? You bet! Immigration policy? "Remember the Alamo!", etc., etc...

In fact, what's even better, he's only voted once in the last twelve years and that was for Bush in 2004! Seriously, WTF??!!

If these are your values and priorities, by all means vote for him, but please don't do it for the novelty or to "send a message". What message would you be trying to send? It wouldn't surprise me if he won based on sheer power of personality alone, but, to paraphrase Clay Robison, don't be fooled into thinking you're supporting some kind of freethinking progressive who shares your values. You're supporting Larry the Cable Guy.

It's a shame to see anyone vote straight ticket. It's much better to vote for the candidate that will make a positive change. Anyone who votes straight Democrat ticket is just as hypocritical as the straight-Republican-ticket voters they scrutinize.

May Ann rest in peace. She was a vibrant force in Texas politics.
