The 19th annual Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF) kicks off in exactly one week, and things are looking better than ever for the oldest and largest GLBT film fest in the Southwest. Nearly two decades ago, the festival began as a humble, five-film event over at the Dobie. This year, aGLIFF will screen an astounding 150 films from over 20 countries, with well over 10,000 attendees in total. Entitled "Say What?", aGLIFF 19 includes feature-length films ("Fat Girls," "Puccini For Beginners," "Eleven Men Out") documentaries ("Do I Look Fat?", "Take the Flame! Gay Games: Grace, Grit & Glory,"), and shorts ("Boy-O-Rama," "International Male," "Danger Zone"). Next week, we'll preview some of the feature films premiering at the fest. For now, read on to find out afterparty details, where to buy tickets, and how you can create your very own interactive schedule!

The Soundpost Feature Film Director Award
Having teamed up with Soundpost, a digital distribution and licensing service for indie artists and labels, aGLIFF this year inaugurated the Soundpost Feature Film Director Award, a juried prize that provides a soundtrack grant of $130,000 for one of the filmmakers to be screened at the festival. Chosen by a panel of judges that included Leila Hernandez (co-host/co-creator, Austin Movie Show), Chale Nafus (Director of Programming, Austin Film Society), and Janet Pierson (Co-President, Grainy Pictures; Vice President, Austin Film Society), the final four nominees were:
- C.R.A.Z.Y. (Dir., Jean-Marc Vallee)
"Homage to the pop-culture-saturated middle class of the seventies. Zachary Beaulieu, a sexually confused teenager with an affinity for Bruce Lee, John Lennon, and, most importantly, David Bowie, tries to survive four rough-and-tumble brothers and win the affection of his loving but old-fashioned father." - Gypo (Dir., Jan Dunn)
"An emotionally charged debut that tells the story of an unhappily married working-class couple in their mid forties, barely holding it together caring for their 18-year old daughter Penny’s out-of-wedlock newborn son. Their loveless marriage is shaken to the core when Tasha, a young Romany Czech refugee is befriended by Penny. Notwithstanding its status as the first official UK Dogme95 film, the bare bones of Gypo’s aesthetic invests the narrative with a sense of authenticity and truth that is almost documentary-like in its realism." - Paper Dolls (Dir., Tomer Heymann)
"Paper Dolls follows a group of gay Filipino immigrants in the suburbs of southern Tel Aviv, working as caregivers to elderly Orthodox Jews. They develop a deep familial bond with these elderly men that's suprising and heartwarming. On their one day off a week, these same immigrants entertain their fellow Filipinos with a drag-queen show called 'The Paper Dolls.'" - Saint of 9/11 (Dir., Glenn Holsten)
"Saint of 9/11 is a portrait of Father Mychal Judge, Franciscan friar and chaplain of the New York Fire Department. The world came to know Father Judge in death as a symbol of courage and sacrifice: a hero. Saint of 9/11 is about his journey as a recovering alcoholic, a gay man and a quintessential priest."
