Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show

The following is a weekly column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her on KUT 90.5FM Friday nights, 11pm-3am. -- The Editors

Brain…hurting…from…music…overload. And what a great feeling that is!

Once again, I’ve rounded up another impressive selection of music from local talent, some of whom have shows coming up this weekend. There is so much to choose from that it makes my head spin. Aaawww. Just like Linda Blair. Isn’t that cute?

Pompeii is sounding super fantastic. They have a show tomorrow at Trophy’s on South Congress, and a show coming up October 5 at Emo’s with Ghostland Observatory and Mellowdrone. Don’t forget that Pompeii will have a limited amount of copies of their latest CD, “Assembly,” on sale at the Emo’s show. The CD is officially due for release October 10.

Speaking of CD releases…the Lovely Sparrows will have their CD release performance at Emo’s as well, on October 13. I’ve been playing the “Pulling Up Floors, Pouring On (New) Paint” EP quite a bit. Mark your calendars and see them live. Absolutely magical.

The Happy Families undoubtedly make me incredibly happy, and they’re on this evening’s setlist for sure. They have a gig coming up tomorrow night at Lucy’s in San Marcos, with Clap! Clap! and Model U.N.

Another Saturday gig you won’t want to miss: For Those Who Know, scheduled to play at Beerland on Red River tomorrow night. This will be followed by an October tour for the band, with their first stop in Atlanta, GA.

As you know, I’ll be working tonight into the wee hours, so no partying or shows for me, but you still have the opportunity to catch Xcella at Hole In the Wall this evening, along with Magic Surprise. Have a pint for me, kids.

Curses! I wasn’t able to attend the French Kicks show last night, which featured The Lemurs on the bill. I do likes me some Lemurs. Excellent music.

In the “COMING SOON” portion of my column: Get those calendars marked for what promises to be a great show at the Parish on September 29. Dynah takes the stage, along with Meriwether, the Panic Division, and Austin band Dremnt the End.

My October calendar is filling up quickly here…keep October 1 in mind for a special solo performance by Will Johnson of Centro-Matic at Emo’s, sharing the bill with Richard Buckner. Got to chat with Will just last night, and it seems a tour for Centro-Matic is coming up soon.

Also prepping for a tour is the IV Thieves. They’re headed to the UK to make the rounds. By the way, I send more groovy vibes and belated birthday wishes to the IV Thieves’ Glynn Wedgewood. Cheers to you, sir. Remember: Pints are better than birthday cake any day.

They rushed and ran around and hurried, and it was worth it. Thank-you’s go out to The Dolly Partners and ’Til We’re Blue Or Destroy for delivering their CDs to KUT for me. And I’m excited to report that my zombie watch has paid off! Expect a sneak preview tonight of the ghoulishly great sounds of The Unbearables’ zombie rock opera, “Just One Bite.”Details about the rock opera are forthcoming. (Word has it that more zombies were spotted just outside the Austin City Limits Festival grounds…guard your brains, people.)

Also on my playlist – and they’ve been regulars on my other Friday playlists, I admit – is Peel. Keeping it real. That’s the deal. Expect their first album from Peek-A-Boo Records soon, and they’ll be the next feature on my segment Before the Break. Still producing those stories like mad, but they’re on the way. Nine – count ‘em – nine more Before the Break profiles coming soon!

So, join me this evening for the debauchery, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., on KUT 90.5. As RoboCop would say: Thank you for your cooperation.
