Austinist Music Preview: New Release Tuesday

If ACL fest hasn't caused you to hate music, you might want to check out this week's new releases:

shadow.jpg DJ Shadow The Outsider (Universal)

DJ Shadow's latest offering has certainly managed to garner (perhaps more than) its fair share of critique, and for fans of Shadow who have been listening since Entroducing, it's fairly easy to see why. Outsider is, for the most part, DJ Shadow's most straightforward foray into hip-hop, and features an overwhelming amount of "featurings" and a lot more rapping than you might be used to, but this doesn't make it a bad record. Shadow's brand of esoteric hip-hop still shines through, but in harder-to-find places in between easier to swallow dance numbers.

arthur.jpg Joseph Arthur Nuclear Daydream (Megaforce)

Nuclear Daydream picks up where Come to Where I'm From left off, with sweeping vocal arrangements and luminous melodies providing a jaunty and elegantly assembled collection of gems. Look for Arthur on tour this fall supporting the album, and prepare for the onslaught of Arthur inclusions in all your favorite WB dramas.

Indie country/folk hero Will Oldham has to be one of the most prolific songwriters of our time, as on the heels of his collaboration with Tortoise and this summer's EP The Cursed Sleep we have The Letting Go. Utilizing a twin-guitars-and-rhythm lineup with layers of backing vocals and orchestration, the album still haunts in the minimalistic and lonely way that all good Oldham creations do, and an even bigger feat will be the album's surround sound version, Oldham's first adventure in "well-rounded" recording.

Sleeper of the Week:

whitest.jpg Whitest Boy Alive Dreams

Erlend Øye (Kings of Convenience) started Whitest Boy Alive back in 2003 as an electronic project, but it has evolved into a full-on band without any programmed elements. Their latest, Dreams, features electro-funk Rhodes instrumentation and DJ-friendly dance numbers as well as post-punk influences. How they haven't exploded is anyone's guess, but we're predicting it's the soundtrack to fall at places like Beauty Bar.
