Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show

I’m on caffeine, ladies and gentlemen. Strictly caffeine. It’s been a hectic week, but it’s also been an exciting one with the unveiling of KUT’s new website look. I’ll be posting quite a few new Before the Break episodes to coincide with the new vibe.

The new website style will also allow me to keep a regular playlist online, so you know what I’m playing. Here’s a sneaky peak at what to expect on this evening’s Laurie Show. Or…Laurie Extravaganza. Whatever you wanna call it for now.

I cannot resist the tracks on Dynah’s latest, Wake. They have a show at Freddie's, 1703 S. 1st St., on Monday. You might also want to mark your calendar for Dynah’s upcoming gig at the Parish on Sept. 29. They share the bill with Panic Division and Dremnt the End.

It’s true; I just won’t quit yapping about Peel, which is why they’ve been a regular fixture on my Friday night playlist. The band has a gig at End of An Ear’s one-year anniversary shindig tomorrow at 5 p.m. Strongly recommended, and congratulations to End of An Ear. Well done.

It seems Mr. Lewis and the Funeral Five are taking their fantastic live performance to Louisiana this weekend, playing the Red Star Bar in Baton Rouge and the Dragon's Den in New Orleans. I’ll play a little something by them in their honor. Be sure to catch them when they return for a Flipnotics show on September 15.

Laurie’s random rockin’ list: The Faceless Werewolves, who graciously got their CD to me in the mail this week (thanks very much, kids!); the IV Thieves, another regular dose of rock that I need during my show; and the Interest Kills, who, by the way, will be playing at Emo's Lounge on Saturday. Great stuff coming from them, too.

My love affair continues with those crazy White Ghost Shivers, playing music near and dear to my heart. If you’re not dancing at their shows, you’re probably dead. Or a dork who has no concept of a great time. Don’t forget that the Shivers grace the teenie tiny stage of the Longbranch Inn tomorrow night with the Theatre Fire. The Shivers will be heading to San Antonio for a September 13 gig at Blue Bubble Ballroom.

I’ll provide music by touring bands whose upcoming shows have been on my mind as of late: Architecture in Helsinki, who’ll be at Emo's on September 19; and Ladytron, in town October 21 at Stubb's. Both bands also make me dance. Dancing is good. Especially while I’m on the air and no one can see me and run in terror.

Last but not least: I’m pleased to announce I received a CD in the mail with some tracks from St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark. Her work is a thing of beauty, quite melodic. Ms. Clark has opened for such diverse acts as Television, Tuck & Patti, and Xiu Xiu, to name a few. She also happens to be a member of a bigger outfit you may have heard of: The Polyphonic Spree.

Don’t forget, kids: The fun starts at 11 p.m. and runs to 3 a.m. each Friday night, on KUT 90.5 FM. As RoboCop would say: Thank you for your cooperation.
