It's Official. This Weekend: #1 vs. #2
*Update: The Statesman has reported that deputies unnecessarily used tasers on Tarell Brown and Tyrell Gatewood before their arrest Monday morning. Jamie Balagio, attorney for the players, says that a tape of the arrest should be made public.*
Update: Starting cornerback Tarell Brown and reserve safety Tyrell Gatewood, arrested for marijuana and gun possession, will not play against Ohio State on Saturday.
The AP released its latest college football poll today, and, after a strong showing by the UT defense and red-shirt freshman Colt McCCoy, combined with a weak performance by the Golden Domers down in Atlanta, the Longhorns have moved up to the #2 ranking. Ohio State, after easily handling Directional U. (Northern Illinois) remains in the cat bird's seat. That sets up the first regular season battle between a #1 and #2 in 10 years (1996, Florida vs. Florida St.).
Ohio State is led by quarterback Troy Smith, who some are already calling the potential second coming of Vince. His main target remains Ted Ginn, who will be covered by "a player to be named later." The Buckeyes are a little weaker on the other side of the ball, as they feature 9 new starters.
Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and the College Game Day crew will be in town again this Saturday for the big game. UT seems to step it up when the boys come to town, as they are 3-0 when Game Day visits Austin. Also expect a lot of Buckeyes in town, s some papers are predicting as many as 35,000 fans to invade our shores this weekend.
The Longhorns are a 2 1/2 point favorite in Saturday night's game. So, Austin, which team will wake up Sunday morning as the #1 team in the country and why?
*Update: According to a statement from Tarell Brown's attorney, the gun/marijuana thing was a bit of a misunderstanding. Apparently, the gun was legally reigstered to Tyrell Gatewood and neither of the players were stoned.*
