Austinist Music Preview: Golden Bear, The Channel

Austin's C-Side Records has been busy the last few months, releasing albums by two bands to watch back to back. Golden Bear's self-titled debut is a near perfect collection of songs with influences as diverse as Spacehog, early Built to Spill and My Morning Jacket. Austin music scene bright lights such as Pink Nasty, Voxtrot’s Jared Van Fleet, The Black Angels’ Kyle Hunt, and Jason Morales of Tia Carrera help out on the album, but even as up to 15 musicians collaborate, each song remains purposeful and directed: learn how to write a song by listening to this album.
The Channel haven't been slacking, either. Their double-CD, Tales From the Two Hill Heart / Sibylline Machine is one of those rare double CDs that contains music which justifies the epic. An easy-going, 60's pop-influenced work, the album follows in the footsteps of the great songwriters of days gone by, utilizing gentle vocal harmony, faint country vibes and psychedelic (in a good way) flares to an impressive end. Think The Lilys meets Sgt Pepper meets a more obessive compulsive version of the Silver Jews.
Luckily for you, Golden Bear and The Channel are playing tonight at The Parish Room with Tacks, The Boy Disaster. Tacks, The Boy Disaster is another Austin band to keep an eye on, receiving plenty of positive blog press lately, as their song "Frozen Feet" makes the rounds and gets everyone hooked on its greatness.
